Au lieu de considérer une courbe F (x , y ) = 0 dans le plan de coordonnées (x , y ), on considère une courbe dans le plan projectif de coordonnées homogènes [X : Y : Z ] définie par une équa- tion polynomiale homogène en trois variables F (X , Y ,Z ) = 0. Tout point du plan projectif pour lequel Z != 0 définit un point du plan affine de coordonnées x = X/Z et y = Y /Z si bien que le plan projectif apparaît comme le plan auquel on a ajouté la droite à l’infini Z = 0. On comprend alors qu’une hyperbole du plan affine rencontre l’infini en deux points, correspondant aux deux asymptotes, alors qu’une parabole est tangente à la droite à l’infini. Ainsi, l’utilisation de la géométrie projective simpli- fie la situation de manière importante et on revient à la situation initiale Qu'est ce que ce plan projectif ?, est ce un plan dont on choisit arbitrairement l'orientation et sa position ? et l'on projette alors la courbe sur ce plan ? ce qui ferait qu'en modulant l'orientation et la position du plan on obtiendrait divers type de courbes, ou est ce autre chose ?
