Topology of functions
Even the most basic of functions of criss-crossing straight lines tells a narrative of the similarities and distinctions between the effects of the qualities of the combined functions. Within the range of x=x plus x=x+1, combined with y=-x and y=-x+1, there is a cross-section of points between x=-0.5 to +0.5 and y= 0 to y=1 that depict a quality of those functions parallel and crossing paths. If you replaced the four line functions with names such as x=status quo; x+1=optimism; -x=skepticism; -x+1=cynicism, then you would see those points that have a mix of status quo, optimism, skepticism, and cynicism to those who tend more closely to those polarities
