Nets of Solids

Watch the following video on nets of 3D objects.

Net of a Cube

  1. Explore the different net possibilities by dragging the icon along the pattern line.
  2. Close the net to see how it forms a cube.
  3. Talk about what you see with your partner.
  1. Explore the net of the rectangular prism by changing its dimensions.
  2. Fold the net and rotate the image.
  3. Think about how the nets and prisms are changing. Discuss with your partner.

Net of a Square Pyramid

  1. Change the height and length of the pyramid. Open and close the net.
  2. What do you notice? Discuss with your partner.

ACTIVITY

Work in pairs to create your own nets of solids. Experiment with different:
  • 3D shapes
  • Creating different nets for the same 3D shape
  • Changing the dimensions of your nets. How does this change the solid?
You may use Geogebra, Microsoft Paint or a program of your choosing. Consider printing out your designs to test if they form a solid.
