To support the horizontal component of the oblique forces the walls had to be very thick. Even a span of just 5 m ttakes a wall with a thickness of 1,25 m.
Chapaize
One of the oldest romanesque churches in Bourgondy is the church of Chapaize (mid 11th century). Despite the very large colums and the tick walls one can clearly see that the walls have been pushed aside by the barrel vault.
