Fuel Consumption Calculator

How far can you drive on a 'SQUARE' centimeter of gasoline? In the European Union fuel consumption of automobiles is measured in litres/100 km. Litres are a measure of VOLUME; Kilometers are a measure of length. Therefore, the measurement unit associated with litres/100 km is an AREA. In the US fuel consumption of vehicles is measured in miles/gallon. Gallons are a measure of VOLUME; Miles are a measure of length. Therefore, the measurement unit associated with miles/gallon is 1/AREA. How can you interpret this area? What questions could / would you ask your students based on this applet?
