Web Quest 2.0 - S2 Lift-Rod Problem

Task info:

You are asked to move a metal rod from G/F to 4/F by using the lift located at Block B in our school. Calculate the length of the longest rod which can be carried into the lift. In the applet, move points M and S around to find the longest length of MS. To make MS the longest, M and S should be points touching the ceiling and the floor of the lift respectively. Guiding questions for your group discussion:
  1. For the longest MS your group suggested, are you sure you can carry it into the lift?
  2. How to use Pythagoras theorem to find the length of MS you drew in the applet?
  3. What are the geometric requirements if we wish to use Pythagoras theorem?
  4. Can your group locate the required shapes in the scenario? Which of them are useful for the calculations of MS ?
