Constant sum to two foci
The pink and green line segments from the foci to a given point on the ellipse have the same length as the pink and green generators of the cone, from the point of the ellipse to the Dandelin spheres. So the sum of the two distances equal to the distance between two fixed meridians of the cone, and hence is constant.
