Volume of a Rectangular Prism

Exploring Cubic Centimeters

Experiment with cubic centimeters by dragging the orange, green and blue bars to build different rectangular prisms.

Complete this activity:

1) Create a rectangular prism of your choosing by dragging the cursors to where you would like them to be. 2) Count how many cubes make up your shape, remembering to take into account the cubes that you can't see (count the number of cubes in each layer and then times that by the number of layers). This is the volume of your shape in cubic centimeters! Extension: Now that you know how to work out the volume of a shape in cubic centimeters, have a go of making differently shaped rectangular prisms that have the same volume (e.g. long and skinny, short and fat).
