A Different kind of Analog Clock

In the right hand panel is a traditional analog clock. In the left hand panel there is an analog clock in the form of a graph with plots of an "hour function" and a "minute function". Use the slide in the right hand panel to set the time on the traditional clock. [the left & right arrow keys allow finer control] Explain how to read the clock in the left panel? Can you tell time with just the blue function? just the green function? How can you use this tool to tell you the angle either the minute hand or the hour hand turns through in going from one point in time to another? Write expressions for the hour function and minute function. Do you need both functions to read the clock? Why or why not? Write an expression for the ‘distance’ between two times. What questions could / would you put to your students based on this applet?
