Exploring Dilations

Did you pay attention in class?

What are the coordinates of point Y' (the image of Y) ?

Solve #20 using this setup:

Dilate ∆ABD by a scale factor of 2 with the center of dilation at the origin (0,0).

How do the side lengths of the ∆ABD compare to the side lengths of ∆A'B'D' ?

Compare the perimeters of the triangles. (easy method: select the Toolbar Image tool and click inside the polygon)

Create another shape and dilate it with a scale factor of k and center of dilation at C.

How do the side lengths compare ?

Compare the perimeters.

What effect does moving point C, the center of the dilation, have on the image ?

Directions:

>> Modify the dilation by changing the value of k. How do the side lengths compare ?

Create another shape and dilate it with a scale factor of k and center of dilation at C.

How do the coordinates compare? (Use the Toolbar Image tool to reveal the point labels.)
