Dale Copy of 8.GM.1 - Messing With Lisa Rotations Only

Let's Rotate Mona!

A rotation is a transformation that is called a 'turn.' Rotations in 8th grade will normally turn around the origin (0,0). You can rotate objects clockwise (to the right) or counterclockwise (to the left). Rotations of 180 degrees clockwise are the same as rotations of 180 degrees counterclockwise.

To work this applet...

Make sure to click on the box next to Rotate Mona. Leave the center of rotation (point A) at the origin. Note the slider under the angle box. Play with the slider some. Positive rotations are counterclockwise and negative rotations are clockwise.

Note: LARGE POINTS are MOVEABLE.

Make Mona rotate 90 degrees (90 degrees CCW).

1) Where is the point (2,-4) after a rotation of 90 degrees CCW? 2) Where is the point (5,-4) after a rotation of 90 degrees CCW? 3) Write a rotation of 90 degrees CCW as a function. Answer below.

Make Mona rotate 180 degrees (180 degrees CCW).

1) Where is the point (2,-4) after a rotation of 180 degrees CCW? 2) Where is the point (5,-4) after a rotation of 180 degrees CCW? 3) Write a rotation of 180 degrees CCW as a function. Answer below.

Make Mona rotate 270 degrees (270 degrees CCW).

1) Where is the point (2,-4) after a rotation of 270 degrees CCW? 2) Where is the point (5,-4) after a rotation of 270 degrees CCW? 3) Write a rotation of 270 degrees CCW as a function.

Make Mona rotate -90 degrees (90 degrees CW).

1) Where is the point (2,-4) after a rotation of 90 degrees CW? 2) Where is the point (5,-4) after a rotation of 90 degrees CW? 3) Write a rotation of 90 degrees CW as a function. 4) Compare the answers to a 90 degrees CW rotation to the answers to a 270 degrees CCW rotation. What do you notice? Answer below.

Use the function rules from above to answer.

Where would the new points be if A(2,4) V(4,1) E(-3,5) R(4,-2) Y(0,-3) after a rotation 90 degrees counterclockwise? Answer below. Use A', V', E', R' and Y' to indicate the new points.
