Module 2 Topic 1 Lesson 5 Activity 5.1

Investigating the Circumcenter

Place 2 additional points on the circle below. The three points will represent exhibits 1, 2, and 3.

Step 1

Use a construction to show all possible locations of the kiosk so that it is equidistant from Exhibit 2 (B) and Exhibit 3 (C). Explain your reasoning.

Step 2

Use a construction to show all possible locations of the kiosk so that it is equidistant from Exhibit 1 (A) and Exhibit 2 (B). Explain your reasoning.

Step 3

Use a construction to show all possible locations of the kiosk so that it is equidistant from Exhibit 1 (A) and Exhibit 3 (C). Explain your reasoning.

Step 4

Can you determine a location that is the same distance from all three exhibits? If so, where is it? Can there be more than one possible location that is equidistant from all three exhibits?

Step 6 and 7.

The perpendicular bisectors of each side of triangle ABC are shown in red above. Move points A, B, and/or C so that the triangle is 1) an acute triangle (not equilateral); 2) Obtuse triangle 3) Right triangle 4) Equilateral triangle What do you notice about the location of the intersection of the three perpendicular triangles for each triangle?

Step 7

Step 7a

Create the perpendicular bisectors of each side of the triangle above. The point where all three perpendicular bisectors intersect is called the point of ________________________.

Step 7b

Create point D at the point of concurrency. Create a circle with D as the center and radius DA. Move point A. Move point B. Move point C. What do you notice?
