Part 1

Follow the directions for Part 1 before moving on to Parts 2 or 3. Be sure to answer all the questions.

Step 1

Make sure that all slider are set to 0. Move slider 'r' from r=0 to r=4. Click and hold point E, drag it around point C and observe the results.

Question 1

A. How far is every point you plotted away from the center of the figure? B. What shape does this create?

Step 2

Now move slider 'r' from r=4 to r=2. Click and hold point E, drag it around point C and observe the results.

Question 2

A. What happened to the length of the segment of 'r1'? B. What happened to the size of the figure?

Step 3

Now move slider 'r' from r=2 to r=5. Click and hold point E, drag it around C and observe the results.

Question 3

A. What happened to the length of the segment 'r1'? B. What happened to the size of the new figure? C. Do you notice a relationship between the change in length of the segment of 'r1' and the change in the size of the figure?

Question 4

Which of the following best describes the position of segment 'r1' in the figure?

Tick all that apply
  • A
  • B
  • C

Step 4

Click the refresh button in the right hand corner of the screen (this should clear any figures you created in part 1 thus far). Move slider 'h' from h=0 to h=1, slider 'k' from k=0 to k=1, and slider 'r' to r=0 to r=2. Click and hold point E, drag it around point C and observe the results.

Question 5

A. What effect does the change in sliders have on the coordinates of point C? B. What relation does point C have to the figure? (Where in the figure does it lie?)

Step 5

Now manipulate slider 'r', 'h', and 'k' to change the size and position of the figure. Click and hold point E, drag it around point C and observe the results.

Question 6

What factors does the size of the figure depend on? (Select all that apply)

Tick all that apply
  • A
  • B
  • C
  • D
  • E
  • F

Question 7

What factors does the position of the figure depend on? (Select all that apply)

Tick all that apply
  • A
  • B
  • C
  • D
  • E
  • F
