Introduction to coordinate geometry
Introduction to coordinate geometry
When doing coordinate geometry we will need the coordinates of points and/or a coordinate plane.
The things you will learn to do:
1. Determine the distance between two points
a. for two points that lie on a horizontal line*
b. for two points that lie on a vertical line*
c. for two points that lie on an oblique line*
*note: The line does not necessarily need to be drawn in.
2. Determine the length of a segment
You will do the same as you did in determining the distance between two points because we use the coordinates of the segment's endpoints.
3. Use the distance formula
4. Calculate the coordinates for the midpoint of a segment.
a. calculate the coordinates of a segment's endpoint from its midpoint's and the other endpoint's coordinates.
5. Calculate the slope of lines and segments.
a. use the slope to determine if lines are:
1. parallel or
2. perpendicular
6. Apply your facts in order to:
a. calculate the perimeter of a figure.
b. calculate the area of a figure.
c. prove/verify relationships.
