Damped Oscillations
The damped oscillator is governed by a differential equation ay'' + by' +cy =0, where a=mass, b= the damping constant and c=spring constant. if the damping is strong compared with the spring constant (b^2 > 4ac) the motion is over damped, but if damping is small the motion oscillates.
