Pre-Read (Warm-up): Identify Key Information

Before thoroughly reading BBQ Corn, skim over the problem for key words, numbers, symbols, and units. List the key words, numbers and symbols below.

BBQ Corn

Eleanor is planning on opening a food truck selling barbecued corn on the cob.  At the farmer’s market, she met Sid from Greenville Farms.  Sid will sell Eleanor corn for 40 cents an ear.  But Eleanor can buy six ears of corn at Costco for $2 if she opens a Costco account for $55. First Read: Describe what is happening

Read the problem. Then, in your own words, describe what is happening in the space provided. What is the scenario? Who are the main characters? What are they doing? What is the problem they are facing?

With your partner, discuss your responses. Include important distinctions. Make changes to your answers if necessary.

Second Read: Explore & Mathematically Describe Eleanor's Options

What options is the main character faced with? Be as specific as you can.

Use key word identifiers from the problem to write equations representing each of Eleanor's options in the space below.

Now graph the equations.

Read 3: Explore & Answer the Essential Question

Revisit the problem and your responses. What should Eleanor do in this situation? What would you do? Consider your own values as well as the mathematical results. Describe these to justify your answer. Be ready to share in a class discussion.
