Instructions

Hello Team, We will be investigating how to find the midpoint of a segment on a coordinate plane. As a class, we will discuss any patterns we observe and we will generalize the relationship in order to derive an equation to find the midpoint of any segment on a coordinate plane. 1. You will be assigned two coordinates. 2. Place points at the assigned coordinates. 3. Construct a segment that connects the two points. 4. Determine the midpoint of the segment. 5. Make sure that the midpoint is truly the midpoint by measuring the smaller segments created by the midpoint. 6. Mark the segments congruent with the appropriate markings. 7. Finally make note of the coordinates of the midpoint. Fill out the Google Form for the Midpoint Investigation.

Investigation

Class Discussion

Analyze the data that Mr. Urbina is presenting on the screen. What patterns do you notice? Does this remind you of anything else that you have previously seen? Can you come up with a rule that could work for other midpoints?

Explain how you would find the coordinates of the midpoint of a segment if you know the coordinates of the endpoints. Use complete sentences.

Find the coordinates of the midpoint of the segment with endpoint coordinates of (-17.4, 56) and (40,-13.8).

Write the equation that we derived in class to find the coordinates of the midpoint of any segment with endpoints and on a coordinate plane. Select to insert any math symbol you need.
