niches with a geometrical pattern of squares

Although the foral decoration of the facade is dominating, the face shows a geometrical decoration of simple squares in the niches of the facade and the two flanking towers. In contrast with the ample variatons on overlapping squares filled with kufic writing in the Timurid monuments of Samarkand, here the sqares are filled with smaller squares in dark or light blue and white. The only fantasy is the shape of the niches. In some the rear side is flat and the niche is crowned by a barrel vault, in others the floor plan of the niche is a half octagon, crowned by a half dome. on its curved surface there's no genial solution to cope with the squares. The solution is very pragmatic by additional little squares and lines.
