Carpe diem - a day clock

We divide the solar day into 24 segments called hours. In this applet you can divide the solar day into 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 segments which we can call 'hours'. Each 'hour' is divided into 'minutes'. If a bug is at the tip of the 'hour' hand and another bug is at the tip of the 'minute' hand, how will the separation of the bugs vary as a functions of time? How many maxima and minima does the separation function have during the course of a day? Why is the behavior of the separation function different when the two bugs are maximally apart and minimally apart? What effect does varying the size of the 'hour' hand have on the answer to the last question? Why?
